We have a very motivated team with experienced colleagues and coaches. A lot of them lost they`re heart in this sport and this region, some of them moved here permanently (or were born here), others just can´t leave and spent most of the year here in their van and yet others are travelling and discovering this paradise.
What we have in common is we all have a big passion for this sport and are more than stoked to share this passion with you! Because our team is so happy in this little paradise in Cantabria, we have many of them coming back for years now, which means they have experience in this specific area, but also in teaching here.

Our surf school is known above all for the high quality of its surf lessons. We adhere to international standards, always trying to personalize them with new ideas and experience.
ISA* qualified surf instructors
Each of our surf instructors has acquired the official ISA licence (International Surfing Association*) as part of their training. To keep their instructor´s licence in force, they have to update it periodically by passing the necessary refresher courses. To ensure maximum safety they are also trained as lifesavers and work with rigorous safety protocols.
13 years of experience
Elementsurf is an ISA certified surf school and a member of the most important European surf federations such as Austrian Surfing and the Surf School Alliance (SSA). This means that we are always up to date with the latest developments in surf teaching and can incorporate them directly into the surf lessons. Our 13 years of experience, accumulated knowledge and ISA standards give us the knowledge and background to make your learning experience as high-quality as possible.
*The ISA is the leading international organisation for our sport and therefore sets standards that are valid worldwide. The ISA is recognised by the Olympic Committee (IOC) and is responsible for the first staging of surfing at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Town of San Vicente De La Barquera
Quiet and peaceful in winter, this place comes alive at summertime, as San Vicente with its long sandy beaches and good infrastructure is a real tourist magnet surrounded by the natural park of Oyambre. Facing the impressive mountain scenery of Picos de Europa, the more than 700 year old Castillo del Rey soars above the historic town centre, where holidaymakers can find a wide range of accommodation, bars and restaurants, as well as numerous shops and services. Connections to Santander, Bilbao and many other destinations are available at the local bus station.
Surf spots in San Vicente de la Barquera
Along the almost 300 km of the Cantabrian coast, you can find more than thirty beaches. The surf spots near our surf school are ideal for beginners and advanced surfers.
Faro:
The most popular surf spot on Playa de Merón is just a 2-minute walk from our surf shop. Directly at the pier situated at the mouth of Ría de San Vicente and protected from the north and east winds, breaks a beautiful righthander, very popular with the most radical surfers as well as longboarders (depending on the tide).
Playa de Merón:
Generally, the 3 km long Playa de Merón offers optimal conditions for surfers of all levels, as the north-west orientation of this beach brings constant waves even in summer. With its sandy bottom and gently breaking waves, it offers ideal conditions for beginners, but there are also some more challenging peaks for more advanced surfers to discover.
Playa de Gerra:
Our surf lessons take place on the eastern part of Playa de Merón, among surfers also known as “Gerra”. Thanks to several sandbanks, you can choose between gentle, long waves and shorter, more powerful ones, depending on the direction and size of the swell.
Playa de Oyambre:
Playa de Merón ends at the cape of Oyambre, which´s eastern side shades into Playa de Oyambre. Due to its more westerly orientation, the waves here are always slightly smaller and perfect for beginners.

Accommodation in the surrounding area
There are plenty of places to stay in San Vicente de la Barquera. The easiest way to find accommodations is on Airbnb or booking.com.
If you want to stay as close to the beach as possible, we recommend Camping El Rosal. Just a 10-minute walk from the town centre, it borders the San Vicente estuary and is located between the small beach of El Tostadero and the best surf spot of Playa de Merón.
You can make yourself comfortable on the camping lots among old pine trees (some of them with sea view!) and large shaded areas. Furthermore you can rent one of the 25 bungalows overlooking the estuary. Each camping lot is provided with electricity and Wi-Fi and there is also a playground for the kids.
